Ai and Education: Universal Fields

Both education and AI are universal fields. Let us explore what that means.

One may come to education from a variety of contexts. For example, one may have a desire to teach their chosen field—a love of content. Alternatively, one may pursue a career in education out of a societal desire to cultivate the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of a reasonable citizen for the public good. In short, the end of the educationist is multivariate. The reconciling of the goals and backgrounds with the instructional approach could be a gradual process in which the individual finds methods, techniques, tools, and theories to communicate and cultivate expertise in the intellectual tasks in which they've worked for many years.  The reasons, inspirations, techniques, and methods underlying teaching and instruction are as broad and diverse as the members of the field. Similarly, AI is a field whose methods may be applied to any area of human intellectual endeavor. 

Designing a system that exists in these two universal spaces is a daunting task. In considering it, I am reminded of Kenya Hara's book, Designing Japan. In the book's preface, Hara writes the following:

I deliberately chose the word "education" because, in addition to the perspective of instruction, it implies bringing potential to fruition...Design is an intention toward a desired end; its role is to imagine and plan the form of the end. The essence of design is to make visible underlying potential and reveal an explicit, significant path for the future, to clearly delineate a vision that can be shared with many (p. x).
