We keep asking the wrong question

The central mistake adults make, Davis argues, is treating “screen time” as a catch-all for tech’s impact on kids. But as any teacher or parent knows, not all screen time is equal. The better question is not how much, but what kind. Is the tech experience self-directed, creative, and social? Or is it passive, mindless, and isolating?

If a child spends 90 minutes editing a video with their grandmother, storyboarding scenes, and mixing audio, that's qualitatively different than watching 90 minutes of algorithmically selected Minecraft videos. The stopwatch might look the same. The outcomes—developmental, emotional, and cognitive—couldn’t be more different.

What looks new is often old

Davis emphasizes that many of our fears about digital technology are repackaged versions of age-old concerns. Adolescents have always sought independence, flirted with rebellion, and craved connection. What’s changed isn’t the developmental arc. It’s the medium. In the 1950s, it was rock ‘n roll. In the 1980s, it was MTV. Now it's TikTok and AI art generators.

Which brings us to a more productive line of inquiry: How do specific technologies interact with specific stages of development?

Personalization and Isolation

Much has been made of dopamine in the digital context. But Davis reframes the issue: dopamine is not the villain. It’s a biological feature of motivation. The problem is how platforms weaponize it through variable rewards, infinite scroll, and algorithmic feeds that exploit curiosity while dulling actual engagement. And this is one of the more sobering insights in our conversation: algorithmic feeds, optimized for engagement and variable rewards, aren’t just wasting time—they may be eroding shared cultural ground.

We’ve traded Walter Cronkite for niche Discords. We don't meet at the watercooler to talk about Friends, we scroll silently through a personalized content soup, half-distracted, eyes glazed, often bored. As Davis put it, even teens are now “bored on Instagram.”

Yes, there’s beauty in digital subcultures. But we should ask what’s lost when personalization crowds out collective meaning.

Creativity needs friction

We talk a lot about sparking creativity in youth, but Davis reminds us that creativity demands something today’s tech often lacks: friction.

Boredom, for example, is not something to be combated through hollow distractions and trivial pursuits. Rather, boredom is a breeding ground for imagination. The skill of sticking with hard, uncomfortable thoughts and the slow burn of real thinking is foundational to any kind of creative life.

Too much of our tech design, she argues, smooths over the struggle that makes deep work possible. We binge, we scroll, we consume, but do we linger, engage, and give back? What do we produce in our present mercurial tech habits? When does foraging for content give way to creating something?

AI and the co-creation frontier

Davis remains optimistic, however, especially when it comes to generative AI. She sees potential for lowering the floor of entry and raising the ceiling of possibility, especially for kids who struggle to bring ideas to life.

But she cautions: the risk isn’t that kids use AI. The risk is that they use it only to bypass hard things, like writing, creating, or grappling with tough ideas. This is where AI as a scaffold seems interesting rather than as a substitute for effort.

Hope lives in small, creative corners

Fan fiction communities. Online collaborations. Teens who email Davis asking how to build better tech.

It’s these examples that give her hope. Not because they’re the norm, but because they show what’s possible when technology bends toward agency and community, not just attention.


Final word: Davis doesn’t reduce the tech-youth debate to slogans. Instead, she asks us to think like developmental scientists and to listen carefully to kids themselves. The challenge isn’t banning tech. It’s building better tech, better norms, and better adult awareness of what young people actually need as they grow.
